The Island of Newfoundland, barely 400 miles across and north to south, has a phenomenal 6,000 miles of coastline. Labrador, another 2,000 miles. As an aid to understanding the complexity of trying to chase down so many places, especially when so many names are the same, the following lists might come in handy. The bays listed are taken from the 1962 Department of Mines and Resources map of the Island and their 1960 map of Labrador (1:1,013,760 scale). The bays start on the "boot" of the Burin Peninsula run clockwise to Placentia Bay.

In the lists that follow the major bay name comes first followed by any secondary inlets (usually called "arm" or "harbour") indicated by a single "-"; tertiary inlets are indicated by two "- -"(eg. Belle Bay is a sub-bay of Fortune Bay and it has 4 smaller bays within it).
